Ateneo Golden Knights barged into the Area Juniors Finals of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas despite the beating they received from Naga City Montessori at the Naga City Civic Center last October 2, 2010.

After extending the Knights’ winning streak to four straight, they were sent back to earth when they absorbed a 68-49 drubbing. The Knights trailed all throughout the game, turned the ball over 23 times and more importantly, lacked the fire and intensity that earned them second seed in the tournament.

Despite the loss, one of the bright spots for Ateneo was the steady guard plays of Felix Valenzuela as he and Carlo Timbalopez were the only cagers who were in double figures.

The other shining moment for Ateneo was the 1-3-1 trap that they used late in the third quarter as they were able to force turnover and get steals that led to eight straight fast break points. Coach Magno Luis Ayo will hope to capitalize more on the trap in their second meeting. After the post-game meeting, the players were unfazed and vowed to rebound from their lackluster performance.

Ateneo will take the floor once again against Naga City Montessori in winner-take-all finals in the afternoon of October 9, 2010 at the Naga City Civic Center. The winner of the Championship will move on and compete against the other area winners.
