The Communication Arts (English) Program

 

The development of communication and logical competencies as well as of wholesome attitudes and values permeates the language course. As students learn a language, they are immersed in experiences that enrich their logical competencies and hierarchy of values through literary and language activities. Thus, they become young men and women marked with competence, conscience, compassionate commitment and Christ –centeredness. This is made possible because at the end of four – year course in English, the students are expected to: 

  • Think clearly and logically;
  • Appreciate the literary heritage of their culture and those of others;
  • Demonstrate awareness of the significance of language and the responsibility in its use;
  • Learn from literature appreciation of the beauty and sensitivity to the feelings of others
  • Communicate his feelings and knowledge, both oral and written, with clarity; and
  • Become independent in searching for, using, and evaluating language materials.

 

 

 

English 1 course adopts the communicative approach to English language learning. This approach aims to mold a communicatively competent student who knows what to say, to whom to say, how to say, and to respond to situations for communication. Students who are fresh from their intermediate experience are exposed to structures of the English language to help them become effective users of the language. They are introduced to different forms of Philippine literature to enable them to meet new people of all ages, most importantly, those of their present world whose experience will eventually lead them to understand life, feel, think, and act the way a responsible Christian must. To achieve the purpose, English 1 focuses on the macro skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through grammar, composition, and literature.

 

At the end of the school year, the students are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate  competencies in listening strategies;
  2. Participate actively in interactions using language in appropriate situations;
  3. Gather data using library and multi-media resources;
  4. Demonstrate ability to fully grasp information on various fields from the text and formulate hypotheses about a text through an in-depth understanding of the language;
  5. Demonstrate cognition and literary skills essential to the understanding and appreciation of literature;
  6. Infer values from literary texts;
  7. Demonstrate imagination and creativity in written forms, especially in descriptions and narratives.

 

 

English 2 further enriches the communication, critical thinking, and study skills that the students learned in the English 1 course. Using Afro-Asian literature, the students learn to appreciate the beauty of literature, understand their own culture and those of others’ take on issues that confront them and their fellows, experience God’s love, as they interact with literary texts and their characters.

 

At the end of the school year, the students are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate competencies in listening  and reading strategies;
  2. React critically to social events and issues read and listened to;
  3. Express ideas, needs, feelings, and attitudes in clear and correct English appropriate to situations;
  4. Gather data on various disciplines using library and multi-media resources;
  5. Demonstrate critical thinking and literary skills essential to the understanding and appreciation of literature;
  6. Show understanding and appreciation of various literary genres with emphasis on Afro-Asian literature;
  7. Demonstrate appreciation of literature imaginatively and creatively in both oral and written forms;
  8. Defend one’s side/arguments in debatable issues in both oral and written forms; and
  9. Write well-constructed paragraphs in any forms of discourse – description, narration, exposition and argumentation.

 

  

English 3 aims to help the students gain insights, skills, and values in order to view the world and life in a broader perspective. With literary studies focused on Philippine, English and American literature, it also emphasizes the development of language and study skills so that the students can think critically and communicate effectively. With exposure on Philippine, English and American literature, the students are led to appreciate and study literature for them to understand God, man and society.

 

 

At the end of the school year, the students are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate competencies in listening  and reading strategies;
  2. Demonstrate ability to assess information given in a text read or listened to;
  3. Speak clear and correct English appropriate to situations;
  4. Develop the ability to choose from varied reading materials designed to give information and pleasure or develop appreciation;
  5. Utilize reading as a means of developing one’s command of the English language;
  6. Demonstrate analytical thinking and literary skills essential to the understanding and appreciation of literature;
  7. Discover literature as a means of developing worthwhile universal values; and
  8. Write expanded compositions using appropriate modes of development to express one’s ideas, need, and feeling.
  

 

 

 

English 4 exposes the students to the critical study of selected literary texts, both canonical and postcolonial, with particular emphasis on those that help students’ faith in God and challenge them to live that faith in their interaction with their peers, their family, and the outside community. Aside from enriching the student’s reading, listening, speaking, and writing competencies, it also engages the students in the study and writing of academic papers and the interpretation, as well as production of literary and media texts.

 

At the end of the school year, the students are expected to:

  1. Develop competencies in listening  to lectures and other forms of fora;
  2. Demonstrate the ability to react creatively and critically to discussions, forums, and audio-visuals;
  3. Develop competencies in speaking before a select group of audience;
  4. Develop the ability to gather and organize data using multi-media resources;
  5. Demonstrate the ability to extract and assess information from texts read and listened to;
  6. Demonstrate thinking and literary skills essential to the critical understanding and appreciation of literature;
  7. Develop competencies in using modern technology in he creative production of texts; and
  8. Develop competencies in writing academic papers using library, field, and Internet resources.
