What do these Latin phrases: Magis, Cura Personalis, Primum Regnum Dei and Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam mean? |
|
A.M.D.G.: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (Latin), meaning "For the greater glory of God." It is the motto of the Society of Jesus. Primum Regnum Dei (Latin) is the school motto which means First the Kingdom of God. This is taken from Matthew 6:33, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His justice and all things shall be added unto you." Magis (pronounced "màh-gis") is a Jesuit phrase that means "the more." It is taken from Ad majorem Dei gloriam. Magis refers to the philosophy of doing more, for Christ, and therefore for others. It is an expression of an aspiration and inspiration. It relates to forming the ideal society centered around Jesus Christ. The roots of the phrase are ascribed to St. Ignatius' exercise of doing more for God. He would encourage people around him during his time by asking: "What have I done for God? What am I doing for God? and What MORE can I do for God?" Cura personalis (Latin), meaning care of the whole person. This fundamental value of the Society of Jesus involves three concepts, according to Brian McDermott, S.J.: (1) Treating people as individuals and honoring their unique worth; (2) caring for the “whole” person (including physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health); and (3) taking into account people’s backgrounds, including their family life, nationality, and culture. Originally used to describe the responsibility of the Jesuit Superior to care for each man in the community with his unique gifts, challenges, needs and possibilities, this value now is applied more broadly to include the relationship between educators and students and professional relationships among all those who work in the academic (usually university) environment. Specifically, a motto of a number of Jesuit colleges and universities. |
