School year starts with Freshmen Orsem |

By Jesha Aina F. Noble; Photos by Mr. Meljohn R. Tatel School bells rang early for 485 freshmen as they attended the annually-conducted Orientation Seminar (Orsem) by the Guidance Department last June 1 to 2 held at the Ateneo de Naga University High School Campus.
The seminar had its first venue at the Covered Courts. It started with the registration and assembly of students and was then formally opened by Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Honesto Bermudo III, warmly welcoming the neophyte Ateneans. |

Mr. Principal, Jesuit schools admin travel to China |

Tatel; Photos by Ms. Mheanne Lonto Mr. Gregorio Re Abonal, Principal, joined the other basic education administrators of Jesuit schools in the country in the exposure trip to mainland China on May 16-21, 2010. Organized by the Chinese government’s Confucius Institute, the exposure trip to the Middle Kingdom was composed of administrators from the Ateneo de Manila High School, Ateneo de Iloilo, Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (Cebu), and Ateneo de Naga. |

The opening rites, held at the refurbished Covered Courts, consisted of two parts: the Mass of the Holy Spirit and the Schola Brevis (Short Class). |

Ateneans complete trip to Japan |

By Nico Plantado; Photos by Nico Plantado, Camille Trinidad, and Atoy Albis After a brief halt in the succession of exchanges, ten Ateneans successfully sojourned to the Land of the Rising Sun last April 25 – May 5, 2010 as part of the Ateneo de Naga-Hiroshima Gakuin-Notre Dame Seishin Mutual Exchange Program. The Japanese counterparts failed to send their delegation of high school students and teachers in August of 2009 because of the A-H1N1 scare that affected preparations for the trip to the Philippines. Most Japanese students who travel to the Philippines for the exchange program host in turn when their Filipino counterparts go to Japan for an immersion in Japanese educational system and culture. |

HS adopts new curriculum design |

In the opening of the new academic year on June, Ateneans will have a taste of a new way of seeing “understanding” in the classroom. What’s in store is Understanding by Design, popularly known as UBD. Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe from the United States are the proponents of the design. The design, which was implemented in 2005, highlights “teaching for learning” which is manifested by designing lessons starting with outcomes first. |

HS faculty, staff fire up summer with tour to Albay |

 The usual Ateneo de Naga faculty and staff summer rest and recreation had a twist this year as the group toured the neighboring province last April 23, 2010.
With the loads of sun block and swim wear (for the overdone basking-under-sun-and wading-in-the-water summer routine) set aside, the Ateneo teachers and non-teaching staff favored the tourist attractions in Albay.
