Upholding an Atenean tradition, student and teacher volunteers from the Ateneo de Naga University High School, in cooperation with Sta. Monica Academy (SMA) and the University of Nueva Caceres (UNC), once again held the annual Fiesta sa City Jail for the detainees of the Del Rosario correctional facility last September 19, 2009 from 8:30 to 12:00pm. Following religious services by UNC and SMA, the Atenean volunteers served a lunch of chicken pork adobo and fried chicken to 278 detainees and glimpsed upon the life of the inmates. The Ateneo de Naga Student Government (ANSGO) spearheaded the fund drive for the said event. The Ateneans provided food while the other schools gave toiletries for the inmates.
Stampitas containing the Memorare, a Marian prayer, were also distributed to all inmates. In the course of the event, the Ateneans also had the opportunity to talk to some detainees and hear Mass with them.
The Fiesta Sa City Jail, celebrated on the same day as the fluvial procession, is one of the many outreach activities in the Ateneo calendar. This year's Fiesta was made possible through the coordination of the Coordinator of Student Activites and Community Programs (CSACP), the Student Government Organization (SGO), and the Ateneo de Naga High School Faculty & Staff Club. Fiesta sa City Jail, as an Ateneo High School tradition, started in the early 80s from the prodding of the late Fr. Juan Sanz SJ. He, together with student volunteers willing to sacrifice the fiesta day for the inmates, gathered food donations to be brought to the district jail. |
