Valedictory Address 2012
Written by Camille Trinidad

Reverend Father Jun Viray of the Society of Jesus, our University President, our honored guest, Dr. Allan Sioson, Mr. Gregorio Re Abonal, our Principal, dear Jesuits, members of the administration, faculty and staff, beloved parents, fellow graduates, friends, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon!

As I stand here before you, I cannot help but feel anxious for I am not only speaking in my behalf but of my batchmates too. I am afraid that I may fail my batch that made it all to graduation, who considers this day not only an end of a chapter in their lives but the beginning as well, with new roads to conquer.

As I was starting to reflect on my graduation, I remembered June 2, 2008. That was the very first day I, together with my batchmates were called Ateneans. Coincidentally, that was the first time I celebrated my birthday on a school day and I felt sad. No one greeted me in school. We were strangers to each other. Right then, the only thing clear to me was that “Ateneans are the best students in Bicol”, and I have become one of them! Everything was new then, new faces, new environment, and new questions about what was ahead of us. That day, we were excited yet hesitant to experience the challenges which will make us grow into better persons, excited because we knew that we were trodding new roads, yet hesitant because we did not know what was out there waiting for us. We were caterpillars afraid to hang perilously to make their cocoon – so   uncertain whether it was death or life which awaits us.

TAGAGISING

Pag-araw ay nasilip

Titindig yaring manok

Dadagukan ang dibdib

Saka lang titilaok!

Aba at may sumasabay

Dumadagok, Sumisigaw!

Hindi lahat pala’y himbing

Kayrami nang gayo’y

GISING!

Ateneo de Naga High School Graduation 2011: Valediction

Usually the High School Principal proposes the name of a guest speaker for a graduation like this for my approval. This time, however, tradition was set aside. Mr. Abonal simply declared that after the eloquent valedictory address of Mr. Art Angelo Cerio, I would have to deliver my “valediction” as outgoing President. I could have refused. But I guess I really didn’t want to. For what other President has had the opportunity of addressing such an august gathering as this?

I consider it a privilege to address you graduates, your parents, relatives and friends, along with the administrators, faculty and staff here present of the Ateneo de Naga University.

In the twelve years that I have been here, there have been many changes in the university. We have become autonomous. We have attained institutional accreditation. But nowhere was the change more dramatic than in the high school.

Now that the high school is built and the regular co-educational classes are ongoing – taken for granted – we can look back and smile.

St. Joseph, Patron of Your Graduation
Written by Fr. Joel Tabora SJ

High School Baccalaureate Mass
Ateneo de Naga University
Feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 2011

It is a very happy coincidence, is it not, that this day falls on the Feast of St. Joseph. I hope that means that in recalling the joy of your finally “passing through the pillars” on the day of your high-school graduation, you also recall that you graduated on March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph. It is a special grace. It is as if St. Joseph has volunteered himself as your special graduation Patron, so that in life you might call on him as you special guardian and friend.

The Gospel for today re-counts the story of Joseph well, and brings out the relevance of his life experience for us. Joseph was a carpenter. He was a skilled craftsman, worked successfully with his hands, worked enough to make a modest living not only for himself but also for his future family. Joseph was also a Jew; he worshipped one and only one God, and lived according to the Scripture, the Torah. In the days after the Babylonian Exile, he lived in expectation of the coming Messiah. He belonged to the royal House of David, from whom, it was said, the Messiah would come!
