The Social Studies program is an integrative program for character and social formations. It looks beyond the events and conditions in the past and correlates those which are relevant to nation and citizenship building. Thus, it hopes to develop in the learners the sense of social awareness, social responsibility, involvement and action.
Social Studies I covers Philippine History and Government with Bicol Culture. It includes Philippine geography, political structure, culture, and even problems and issues concerning the country. To enrich the program, Bicol culture is incorporated with the aim of developing a sense of appreciation of our own cultural heritage at the same time developing social awareness on the influences of other cultures especially the Chinese which is the most prevalent nowadays. Furthermore, current trends and entrepreneurship are integrated as they affect Philippine History and Government.
Social Studies II is an in-depth study of the countries and the peoples of Asia. It covers geography, politics, economy and culture of Asia as it shapes the course of world’s events from the past until the present. More emphasis is placed on the study of Shan civilization, different Chinese Dynasties, and development of Chine culture from the early times to the present as they affect other cultures of Asian regions.
Social Studies III focuses on the study of ancient civilizations covering geography, history and culture. It includes the study of the different social, political, cultural, and economic changes which continue to affect us and the rest of the world.
Social Studies IV covers economic theories and principles, values and realities that influence the social, political and historical spheres of the people and the nation. It appraises the problems and issues affecting the internal and external affairs of a country and the world as a whole. Furthermore, basic accounting principles and practices are incorporated to respond to the growing challenges of business and entrepreneurship.
G O A L S
At the end of the student’s four-year course in Social Studies, the students are expected to:
1. understand the social and physical environment affecting a person’s way of life; 2. develop an in-depth social consciousness of how the past events correlate with the economic, political, and social perspectives of the people today; 3. be aware of the needs and problems of the world, in general, and the Philippines and Bicol, in particular; 4. develop an analytical and critical mind to enable the learners to be more appreciative of and participative in the socio-economic conditions around them; and 5. develop values of self-respect, self-reliance, open mindedness, spirituality(CHRIST-CENTEREDNESS), social responsibility (CONSCIENCE), environmental and global concern (COMPASSIONATE COMMITMENT TO CHANGE).
First Year SOCIAL STUDIES I: PHILIPPINE HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT
This is a high school introductory course in Philippine studies that covers Philippine geography, history, culture, and current issues from the Filipino viewpoint, providing the learners with basic background but with an in – depth scope necessary in aiding the learners to understand, evaluate, and formulate their own interpretations on how Filipinos have become, and appreciate their Filipino heritage, particularly Bicol, and the country’s role in the global society in the past, present, and future.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the school year the student will be able to:
1. demonstrate analytical understanding of the historical development of Philippine as well as Bicol civilization, 2. give honor for the birth and development of Filipino nationalism, 3. pay tribute to each foreign country that contributed to the understanding of our social rights and commitment, 4. analyze significant events which shaped the history of the Filipino people and also the Bicolano, 5. appreciate Philippines’ rich cultural heritage particularly Bicol culture, 6. pay tribute to countries that contributed to the preservation and enrichment of our culture, and 7. appreciate the importance of history and geography in the development and progress of a nation.
Second Year SOCIAL STUDIES II: ASIAN STUDIES This is a high school introductory course which aims at providing basic understanding of Asian geography, politics, economy and culture. It offers opportunities for examining and appreciating the significant roles of the countries and peoples of Asia in shaping the identity of the Asian continent. Furthermore, this course aims to develop critical thinking skills that will help the students in formulating intelligent and sound decisions, both as Asians and as citizens of the world.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the school year, the students will be able to:
1. develop an understanding of geographical data and concepts, 2. identify the relationships of Asian geography, politics, economy and culture, 3. demonstrate in individual behaviors and group activities the identity of an Asian, 4. develop competence in using basic skills in Asian studies like the ability to gather and report information, critically read issues about Asia, and participate in group decision making and carrying out plans, 5. demonstrate an understanding of the location and boundaries of the different countries in Asia, its different landforms, bodies of water and the kinds of climate which Asians experience, 6. develop an analytical and critical mind on the real origin of man and the evolution of Asian culture, 7. scrutinize the structures of the different forms of government to realize its importance to the people and the countries of Asia, and 8. appreciate the important events that transpired in the history of Asia that contributed to the growth and development of Asian countries.
Third Year SOCIAL STUDIES III: WORLD HISTORY
This course is an introductory course in Social Studies that provides the students with essential and vital pieces of information on world history, geography, culture and current issues and problems from a global perspective. This course gives the students an opportunity to make them examine, understand and appreciate their global heritage in relation to their past, present and future role in the society, thus inculcating in them a sense of social awareness, open mindedness and a sense of social responsibility to create a more humane society by actively involving themselves in achieving social change.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course in World History, the students are expected to:
1. demonstrate an in-depth social understanding of the various historical events relevant to the current social situation, 2. demonstrate an understanding of the role of geography in the lives of the people all over the world, 3. explain how the physical environment lead to the diversity of humanity and culture, 4. demonstrate skills in critical analysis and decision making on present economic, political and social issues and problems. 5. show sensitivity to the needs and problems of society, 6. show appreciation for the contributions of the world’s early civilizations, and 7. express an appreciation for the legacies left by the ancient man in forming our present civilization.
Fourth Year SOCIAL STUDIES IV: ECONOMICS
This is an introductory course in economics for High School students aimed at providing basic understanding on the fundamental economic theories and principles as they relate to the socio-economic conditions of the country and the world, in general, and the individual & the household, in particular. Furthermore, Basic accounting is incorporated to meet the changing demands of time and respond to the growing trends in business and entrepreneurship. This course develops the analytical and critical thinking skills that will help students make intelligent and well – informed decisions and thus, move them to undertake concrete and productive actions.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the school year, the students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the economic theories, principles and other key concepts affecting the social, political and historical development of the Philippines, 2. employ economic principles in understanding economic issues and realities in the family, school, community and the country, 3. develop critical and analytical thinking in understanding the complexities of the economy and how the system works, 4. appraise the present economic set-up of the Philippines in the light of the theories and concepts learned, 5. appreciate economic concepts and realities as they shape the world around them, and 6. apply basic principles and practices in accounting as it relates to business and daily activities. |
